The short answer is, “You bet!” 

I moved my Mom into our home for the last 5 ½ years of her life.  However, by the end of the second year after she moved in, it was clear that I might have bitten off more than I could chew.  I had not prepared for the challenges of caring for an elderly parent.  The time demands, the physical demands, the information demands and the emotional demands almost buried me. 

I probably came from the same background that most men come from.  I grew up playing most sports, fishing and hunting, hiking and biking.  I was the youngest of three boys, so I was not introduced to baby sitting with my siblings.

My wife took care of our kids, and there were no serious demands on me for care giving of any kind.  Thank goodness the ladies in the family took care of most of the care giving. 

I practiced a little law, started a business or two and was active in the real estate business.  But nothing in my business career or my outdoor activities prepared me for care giving for an elderly parent. 

But I found that I could do it.  It wasn’t easy, but I did it.  It took at lot of time and research, because I came to the game unprepared.  Had I been prepared and had I had the tools, I know it would have been much less stressful and time consuming. 

As the years of eldercare passed, I was thinking about what would have made the job easier.  I don’t think it could have been much easier, but I could have been so much better prepared to cope with the demands.  Knowing what I was getting into, how to get the information and products I needed for elder care and how to spread the load was what I needed. 

Over time, I found the internet to be a great source for information and products. But I had to look for everything—information and products.  I had no index to which I could go for an organized search.  So, I built my own index for information and products—I got organized. 

Financial demands are peculiar to each family, and the potential scenarios are just about limitless.  But, I made notes about assessing and confronting many of them over time. 

Other demands of care giving, energy, emotions and time I resolved through experience.  And I made notes about much of them, too.

Answer: Yes.
